Getting the Right Boots

Whether your child wears an AFO, SMO, or a KAFO, selecting the right winter boot is important to keep him or her moving comfortably and safely all winter long. Features of orthotic-friendly boots include wide toe boxes and removable insoles, but this can vary according to your child’s needs. Winter boot styles and availability are subject to change, and we will do our best to update this list annually. If you have any questions regarding winter boots for your child’s orthoses, contact us and we’ll be happy to make suggestions.

Butler

We like the Butler 3-in-1 boot because it can work for all seasons. Use the flexible outer boot with the liner for cold days. Slip off the liner to wear the boot with your AFO or a shoe. Even slip into the liner on its own for an indoor slipper.

  • Recommended styles: The Macaroni orthotics edition

  • Purchase online through Butler Brand

  • Price range: $80

MyMayu

These boots were designed with AFO and KAFO users in mind. We like the MyMayu boot because of it’s lightweight, tall design and adjustable ankle strap. This all-season boot will pull over a pair of pants to keep your child cry in snow and rain.

  • Price range: $39 - $100, fleece liner $24

  • Purchase online through MyMayu

Kamik

We like the Kamik brand because of the front opening used in many of their boots. This creates a wide opening at the mouth of the boot to slip an AFO through.

  • Recommended styles: Snowbug, Rocket

  • Purchase at MEC, SportChek or Amazon

  • Price range: $45 - $60

Koolway Sports

These boots are made for wheelchair users. We like this custom-made overboot because of it’s long zipper in the back. The zippers on both the boot and the liner extend all the way down to the heel! Oh, and did we mention that they’re made in Canada!?

Because there are no rubber soles on this overboot it is not suitable for walking in.

  • Recommended styles: Kool Boots

  • Price range: $200 - $230

Stride Rite

We like this boot because not only does it have adjustable straps at the ankle and calf, its two pull-straps make putting it on a little bit easier.

  • Recommended Styles: Made to Play (M2P) Sneaker Boot

  • Available at: Amazon and ShoeKid

  • Price range: $65 - $100

Stonz

We love these boots because they can fit some of our smallest patients, and come in sizes for newborn to toddler. In addition to having a wide opening, they have a non-slip sole and removable liner

  • Recommended styles: Orca booties, Scout winter boots

  • Available at: SportChek, MEC

  • Price Range: $45 - $60
